Stealth Motorcycle to Help Police Pursuits in US

Anna H

Police motorbikeCalifornia based Zero Motorcycles have developed a silent motorbike to help with police pursuits. In a bid to remain undetected when approaching or following a criminal, this motorcycle gives the police the upper-hand as they can approach in silence.

This bike won’t be a let down in a chase either; with a top speed of 98 mph and a range of 151 miles, if spotted, the bike could be used to chase down criminals too. However, the bike is intended to be used in urban areas to make the job of a police officer safer and more discreet.

There are two motorcycles due to be rolled out for police and other law enforcement services. They are the Zero SP, which can be used only on the roads and the DSP which can be used on and off-road. Both bikes require charging for between six and nine hours, although they also have a range of over 150 miles.

BBC Future says that the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) are evaluating effectiveness of the new stealth bikes with their officers. Abe Askenazi, Zero Motorcycles chief technology officer, told them:

There are quite a few attributes that make these bikes appealing to the police and military,’

They’re quiet; they’re very stealthy.

Although this is an American release, if the bikes work and do in fact make the jobs of police officers much safer then there’s nothing to suggest that this isn’t something that could be rolled out in the UK in the future.
